Hello bees! How has your weekend been? It’s been pretty terrible weather up here at The Hive! Although we’ve been bright and busy, the damp weather seems to have taken its toll on us… Sniffy, achy and not without a cough or two – sadly a couple of our Worker Bees have been feeling under the weather!
But no need to worry, as we whipped up one of our favourite natural winter remedies that works wonders for a cold, sore throat or tickly cough! So we couldn’t resist sharing it with you as it’s really simple to make and will keep those winter bugs at bay! All you need is a lemon, a chunk of ginger and a drizzle of our favourite golden ingredient…
But before we tell you how to make our natural remedy, we thought you’d like to know a bit of background on why these three ingredients make such an effective remedy (the science bit!). Treating ourselves naturally can help combat your current symptoms as well as strengthen your immune systems and build antibodies to prevent other ailments and viruses. What’s more, this remedy is safe and works wonders for the whole family, new bees and old bees alike!
So to the ingredients; first up, honey: We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – honey is unBEElievable stuff. We chose to use raw local honey (Pa Harper’s!) for this as honey has natural anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties. It’s fantastic for your immune system, and for soothing the throat and reducing coughs. It’s not just us Worker Bees who are mad about honey – studies have found that, in children with upper respiratory infections, honey reduced night time coughing and improved sleep quality better than over-the-counter medicine! In fact, even The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends honey as a natural cough remedy, so next time you feel a tickle in your throat, why not skip the trip to the chemist and whip up your own sweet remedy instead?
Next up, lemon: As you might already know, lemons are loaded with Vitamin C, which may help to shorten the duration of a cold. They are also high in antioxidants that help boost immunity, and have incredible antibacterial properties that help to fight infections.
Finally, fresh ginger root: Similarly, fresh ginger has natural anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties, which help to fight off infections. It has anti-inflammatory properties to soothe sore throats and it can also help to increase perspiration, which helps combat the fevers associated with colds!
So how do you make this wonderful mix?
- 1 lemon, sliced
- 1 chunk of fresh ginger, sliced
- 2 tsp. raw honey (more if desired!)
- Warm water
- A large mug
- Layer the lemon slices and 1-2 slices of fresh ginger in a large jar or mug.
- Add a generous drizzle of honey.
- Pour in the water to fill the jar and mix well.*
- Enjoy straight away or leave to cool. You can drink this warm or cold, but we like it warm during the winter!
*We suggest using warm, not boiling, water bees! It’s best not to heat the honey too much, to preserve all the goodness and nutrients.
It really is that simple bees. All it takes is three humble ingredients and a few minutes of your time. Plus, unlike lots of over-the-counter medicines, this one suits the whole family and it tastes BEElicious! As usual, we love hearing your feedback, so feel free to tag us on our socials @justbeedrinks or email firstname.lastname@example.org if you give it a try!
Keep buzzing bees!
